I personally think that the decision of the cartoon USB flash drive has failed, and UMD is not suitable as a cartoon USB storage device for handheld games. The reading speed of UMD is not as fast as that of a cassette. Due to the increase of the game capacity and the limited memory of the PSP, frequent reading of the disk is caused. As a handheld entertainment product with fragmented time, frequent disk reading behavior itself is unbearable. And because the optical drive needs to physically rotate the disk after all, the complex motion environment of the handheld makes the UMD read more unstable. This is not suitable for the bear kids who love to play with the handheld, and it may even bring safety hazards.
Lao Ren’s insistence on the cassette tape style on the handheld terminal itself is well thought out, taking into account many of the above reasons. As a result, UMD is not suitable for handheld games, which reduces the player’s user experience. Domestic players may not have much experience of UMD’s nausea, because they are going to take the memory stick route… From another perspective, memory sticks were really expensive and limited by capacity at the time. UMD is cheap and has a large capacity, but the reading speed is slow. The effect of the cassette is reversed.
This means that according to the cost of technology at the time, the wealth of players cannot support a perfectly smooth and gorgeous game. This requires a decision to make a trade-off: Either have the large-capacity and gorgeous effect of the PSP, but have to endure the slower reading of the optical drive. Or choose a smooth game with a small capacity flash memory. The tall Sony chose to sacrifice the fluency of game reading, but also insist on large-capacity gorgeous effects. And Lao Ren chose the latter, a simple but more stable and safe, fast and smooth experience. So this is a decision-making problem caused by different understandings of handheld concepts. The same sentence: handheld cartoon U disk as an entertainment product of fragmented time, the waiting behavior of frequent reading of the disk is intolerable.
